Oh Happy Day

The blog turned 10 on Sunday and for now, it will continue. A decade is a long time.

When I turned 10, I thought possessing a double-digit was a rite of passage as if it would hold special meaning. The day coincided with our house warming party and my father insisted that the 100 plus guests not be informed of my birthday because they would feel obliged to bring two presents. Having moved in July why did my parents choose the middle of October as a house warming date? My mother bought me a dress for the occasion. I didn’t want a dress.  I wanted the acknowledgment of my special day. Unconsciously, while playing I ran into a metal trash can that had a sharp edge and tore the dress.  Adults often negate the sensitivity of children.  They trample on their tenderness. My Godmother sensing my disappointment and to compensate gave me several gifts that day.

As adults, we forgive our parents and everyone else beginning with ourselves because in doing so we liberate ourselves.  And we come to realize that no one is immune to making mistakes. It’s part of what makes us human and is part of the dynamics of relationships that forces us to grow.

My father had a generous spirit.  He enjoyed surprising my mother with gifts.  His example set the tone for my brothers.  Or perhaps giving is inherent within them.

When I was growing up my eldest brother would ask that I write my desires on a list, in my mind listing several items as a potential gift would give him ease, but instead, he’d fulfill the entire list! I secretly began to think he was my living Santa Claus! Now he consistently sends a card and gives me wonderful gift certificates from a store of my choice every birthday and Christmas.

My middle brother buys personal gifts. As a child, he mowed lawns and had to mow 20 of them to buy me a Midge doll for Christmas.  And he was a skinny scrawny kid but packed with love and determination! As a young man when he traveled he would indulge me.  On a trip to Spain, I received four pairs of shoes! Now, he will notice if I’m not wearing a watch and thus that will be my gift.

Giving and receiving is a universal law of circulation.  Nothing is static in our universe.  The flow of life is nothing other than the harmonious interaction of the force of our giving and receiving.  If we stop the flow of ether, we interfere with nature’s intelligence.

The more we give, the more we receive. But we forget that we can give more than material goods, although they are imbued with power.  Even the thought of giving, the thought of blessing, and the thought of prayer has the power to affect others.  Because thought has the power to transform.

Our essential nature is one of pure potentiality and infinite possibilities.  The source of all wealth is the consciousness that knows how to fulfill every need including joy, love, laughter, peace, harmony, and knowledge.   Seek these things not only for yourself but for others and every day will feel like the happiest of birthdays.
